I've finally got round to collecting, but need a bit of help. First, anyone know a good starting force? Next, anyone know a decent, affordable paint set?

As far as what "forces" to start with. I'd tailor that to what sparked your interest or mayches your budget. For example, almost all the shows are in paperback form, providing an idea of how many miniatures a good game based on a particular story would require, and give some clue as to how much gaming area you would need. Some games, like the stories, can be played out in "rooms" with little in between. - Like Control Rooms, Victorian Studies, that sort of thing. The basic "Invasion Earth" game box is a good place to start.
Paint wise, I use the craft store type paints. Cheap, reasonable finishes, easy to work with. A few bottles and then mix/match other colors. I'm pretty satisfied with the results. Not a pro type finish by any means but works for me.
