Hi There! I am a long time Dr Who fan and am very close to putting an order in to Black Tree. I was thinking that the basic kit was the place to start and was thinking of getting a Tom Baker and a Sarah Jane, plus perhaps a few more daleks to flesh it out... i was wondering if it is generally a good idea to have balanced numbers of characters on each side? And is more better? Is there an optimal size? Also I was wondering if any of you good people had played the Doctor Who Miniatures Game and if so how the two compare??? Anyway thanks in advance for any replies... hope to be gaming soon! Daniel

Hi - Dive in the water's lovely!
I think the Invasion Earth box set is still pretty good value considering you get Dalek and Unit minis as well as the rule books and other stuff so I'd definitely start with that. It also has a few scenarios in the back of the rule book which will give you an idea of the size of the games.
Invasion Earth does have a points system for each type of character - Daleks are worth something like 3 Unit troopers - so you can have a balanced game if you wanted - or there are loads of scenarios where one side might be a little stronger than the other. Depending on your budget and how many dice you like to role I think the larger games could have around 25 - 30 minis on each side, although some of the most tense and exciting games I've played have been small skirmishes between sides of 5 - 10 minis with specific objectives to complete. Have a look at the scenarios on this site and join the Yahoo Invasion Earth group - loads more scenarios there to give you some ideas.
Haven't played Dr Who minis game yet - its a bit more complex than Invasion Earth and looks great - also their yahoo group is much more active!
Sorry if this is turning into a major essay but one last thing - don't want to put you off ordering from Black Tree as the minis are great and they're really the only retailer selling them but be prepared to wait a while for delivery - I've been waiting just over two weeks for some Sontarans and other bits and pieces and have waited quite a bit longer in the past for other stuff. Might be worth emailing them to check whether the stuff you want is in stock first so you know roughly how long the order might take. On the plus side they have always been pleasant to deal with in the past and more importantly they've put their Daleks in the sale!
